Just off one of the main streets in central Vienna , at Heaven’s Gate so-to-speak, this Osteria serves excellent cuisine. Twenty-five percent or so of Vienna restaurants reflect nearby Italy in a slightly different formula. Daniele on the tourist beat nonetheless turns out savory plates. My companion had “Cesar” Salad with speck, great al dente croutons, and a very cool bowl to serve it in. I had fettuccine carabonara with seasonal spargel. These plates arrived absolutely without delay, and we already had our bottle of Pelegrino; when we tasted the food, we immediately ordered a Proseco, the Italian sparkling wine, and were delighted with the unusual and interesting taste, not just another sweet bubbly that typifies the breed.

This luncheon for us required our departure sooner then we might otherwise have wished. But the seating really was not comfortable. The good food and drink seemed somehow diminished by something simply kitsch and touristic, although one would be hard placed to put a finger on any one element. Perhaps, the perfect but hurried English of the waiter, directed even to my native German speaking companion! Who also speaks perfect Italian!

The atmosphere in the front room disappointed, as the heavy traffic around our table disturbed, and no effort from the staff to help us out, definitely diminishes one’s sense of hospitality. Ask for a table elsewhere. This said, the walls and ceiling give off a seemingly authentic sense of something old, including a heavy chandelier hanging over the very cool looking bar. This Osteria has often been mentioned favorably, and a revisit definitely resides in the near future. More anon.
