Vienna was the capital of an empire, the Austria-Hungarian, which still presided over much of central Europe ninety years ago, the seat of official power was the palace of the Hapsburgs in the City center of Vienna , the Hofburg. Despite American bombing, the building re-erected and is utilized by the chancellery of the Republic of Austria , and its hundreds of rooms deployed frequently to the many Balls still held in Vienna . In fact, there are over 450 such celebrations of dance in the city, the season ending only with the church imposed sobriety of lent. When you come, make sure your Viennese fast waltz is polished. The “volk” or better said society of Vienna take the matter seriously. For me, I take pleasure as a part of the rabble, to ascend a grand staircase of the Hofburg with all these common citizens of the Republic, past the glowering bust of its former proprietor.

Such are the remnants of empire. The young people attend classes wearing white gloves to practice the clockwise speedy glide around smallish studio rooms. Just take a look at Tanzschule Elmayer located just behind the palace on Braunderstrasse. See www.elmayer.at. Trust me when I tell you: the velocity of the dancers picks up in the grand ballrooms of the Hofburg and other venues around the city. To these venues the Viennese devote considerable attention. Expressed in regulation of reconstruction and rehabilitation, and the expenditure of funds, the result finds a functioning city, still a center in Europe for Arts and neutrality related functionaries like OPEC and the United Nations, the city’s expensive charm and authenticity exceeds the imagined imaging of a Disneyland.

I come here when not at Poipu Beach in Hawaii , see PoipuOceanViews.com, and I find Vienna can be a bit gray in the Winter, perhaps this motivated the Emperor to order built a confectionary now called the Palmenhaus. Used as an Orangerie and Schmetterlinghaus, that is for trees and butterflies, here one could winter and alleviate the Emperor’s need to fly to Miami Beach for the Winter. Today the citizens of the Second Austrian Republic , can leave the Ball Season and take a cheap package tour to Florida , enjoy the real castles of Disney World, authentic Palm trees on Ocean Drive ; and, leave for Americans, Arabs and Japanese the Palmenhaus.

Actually, the Palmenhaus still shares the structure with Schmetterlinghaus, and the eponymous café has plenty of Palms, where plenty of Wieners, Viennese, take coffee and smoke and smoke! And more, as this Restaurant can serve some splendid meals, generous portions, and seemingly casual but delightful preparations served on large plates. The setting, amongst the palms and ethereal antique iron and glass, along side the Hofburg, esthetically achieves a sense of well-being. Add to this on beautiful days, a canopied esplanade as large as the interior space for café sipping and dining, giving out to the public Burggarten, where young people sprawl, one squints and sees a Tableau as colorful and soothing as an impressionist painting.  When you come to Vienna , come here, and feel the old empire in casual elegance achieved in few other places.

The menu includes echte wiener specialitates, lots of fresh fish, and a great wine card, which give more than fair value. The service seems a bit slow or rushed, always leaving me with the sense the young staff is overworked, and their grimness suggests the management doesn’t much care. A few painted on smiles would provide a needed improvement. But, just pretend your in France , and then you’ll see them as the most generous and affable of staffs. Note, any Vienna one can just round the bill up to the next nearest digit, to be considered a generous tipper. Until the staff improves that’s all that’s required here.

If the old world is of little interest to you, then please check out my poipu beach vacation rental at PoipuOceanViews.com, this south shore oceanfront location is simply a one-of-a-kind!
