When not at Poipu Beach , the best at PoipuOceanViews.com, then I find myself on the Danube . The old empire city of Vienna does not bring to mind a steak house, nor one on the model of an American chain, but globalization stops for no preconceived notions. In our neighborhood last year this locale took a Spanish spin on the once ubiquitous tapas bars. Called Lizarans. Lizarans shuttered in August for the holidays, which turned permanent.

The location placed just a block from the Opera house, which stands on the famous Ring road of the City. The last emperor, Franz Josef, removed the medieval city wall and in its place “ringed” the inner city with a one-way clock-wise road. The sedate Austrian drivers roar from stop light to stop light in a clock wise direction, and the Strassenbahns glide both direction on either side. These trams are bi-directional, it takes no longer than 15 minutes to circuit the Ring. They still look the same as those one sees pictured in the old grainy black and white films that explain how Dr. Einstein came up with the theory of relativity whilst living in Vienna in the early years of the twentieth century.

In place of the Tapas bar has come Steakpoint. One of three “points” in the city as befits the age. The Tapas bar installation remains, but the seating now much more comfortable, and table cloths. On offer, very reasonably priced cuts of beef, under the names Filet, Entrecote, Rump, a fatty filet cut here, and for the healthy-minded, several plates built on Turkey filets. Salads and side dishes available include a great selection of vegetables; and, would it be a steakhouse without baked potato and sour cream? Didn’t partake, but these babies are big and generous. It’s a metric nation, and your steak or turkey comes in grams, and one pays by gram.

I ordered medium rare 250gm and my companion a mere 180gm unsuitably well-done, the chef perfectly cooked my filet and doubtless lost a tear for the ruined piece demanded by my compatriot. In my view this is the sole relevant criteria for a steak house: cook the steak to order. Serve it quickly and bring on the extras. Steakpoint performs perfectly. And the price is right.

Is there a down side? Sure, the wine selection is poor and in some cases way overpriced. Proseco’s pricing almost requires police action. Enough said: go for the steak. And please remember to return to PoipuOceanViews.com when you leave the old world of Europe and want Oceanfront, Poipu Beach on Kauai , Hawaii at its best.
